Night blindness or Nyctalopia can have several underlying causes. Typically It is due to your retina's rod cells, which are responsible for our eyesight, aging or getting damaged. If these are damaged, you'll have trouble seeing in low-lit places. How is Night Blindness Diagnosed?
An eye exam needs to be performed initially. After that, your doctor may also require you to undergo a series of tests to determine what is causing your eye to have such a problem. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends patients who suspect night blindness consider the following questions.
Most Common Causes of Night Blindness Myopia Also called "nearsightedness," is when you see objects more accurately when they are closer. Cataracts Around 24.4 million people in the US have cataracts. It is the progressive clouding of the lens of your eye which can lead to loss of vision. Since the lenses are opaque, your vision becomes blurry, making it harder for you to see. Glaucoma Another progressive eye problem that damages the optic nerve, which also results in vision loss. It is commonly seen in the elderly. Symptoms of glaucoma include eye pain and visual problems in low light, which relates to night blindness. Retinitis pigmentosa is a rare genetic disease wherein the retina, the eye's light-sensitive layer, deteriorates over time. There is no cure for this disorder yet; its most common early symptom is loss of night vision. Vitamin A deficiency Vitamin A contributes greatly to your eye health, immune system, skin, and proper functioning of vital organs such as the heart and lungs. There are two main types of Vitamin A sources. Preformed vitamin A comes from retinol, which can be found in meat, fish, poultry, and dairy products. Provitamin A from beta-carotene in fruits and vegetables. Diabetes People with high blood sugar are at higher risk for loss of night vision. Your retina is highly dependent on glucose, which is the blood sugar. Diabetic retinopathy is when nerves and blood vessels are damaged in the eye due to high glucose in the blood. Are you having problems seeing road signs while driving at night? Are you having trouble seeing when you get out of the movie theater? Are you suspecting night blindness?
